By area

North of us: Grapevine and Coppell

The closest cluster of things to do sits immediately north of the hotel, which makes it the easiest choice for a half day.

Historic downtown Grapevine. A walkable main street of shops, tasting rooms and restaurants that has kept its small-town character even as the city around it has grown. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs a tourist service from here down to the Fort Worth Stockyards and back in a day, which is a pleasant way to see the two without driving.

Grapevine Mills Mall. A very large outlet and brand-name shopping centre built as a single loop, so you can keep walking in one direction and eventually see all of it. There is a large cinema inside, plus a LEGOLAND Discovery Center and an aquarium attraction, which makes it a reliable rainy-day or high-summer option with children.

Coppell. A quiet suburb just north of us with parks and local dining, useful if you are visiting family in the area rather than sightseeing.

South of us: Irving and Las Colinas

Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. The modern convention and conference venue that brings many of our guests to Irving in the first place, hosting everything from large conventions to small meetings through the year. If you are here for an event, this is likely why.

The Mustangs of Las Colinas. A bronze sculpture of nine wild mustangs running through a watercourse at Williams Square, one of the larger equestrian sculptures anywhere and a genuinely striking thing to stand next to. Free to visit.

The former Texas Stadium site. Where the Dallas Cowboys played until 2008, now cleared and under redevelopment. Worth knowing about if you remember it.

Southeast of us: Arlington and the stadium district

Six Flags Over Texas. A large amusement park in Arlington with a wooden rollercoaster among dozens of rides, plus shows in a Southern tradition you will not find at the chain's other parks. Hurricane Harbor, the water park, sits alongside it and is a separate ticket.

AT&T Stadium. Home of the Dallas Cowboys, and a venue for concerts and major events besides football. Stadium tours run on non-event days.

Baseball in Arlington. The Texas Rangers play in the same district, so a ballgame and a theme park can be combined into one trip out from the hotel.

Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie. Live thoroughbred racing in season plus simulcast racing year round, between us and Arlington.

Further out: Dallas, Fort Worth and the speedway

Downtown Dallas. East of the hotel. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and the Kennedy memorial cover the events of 1963; the Arts District holds the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection of Asian Art within a few blocks of one another; the Dallas World Aquarium is indoors and comfortable whatever the season.

Fort Worth. West of the hotel. The Stockyards keep a working cattle-drive tradition alongside Billy Bob's and the steak restaurants, and the Fort Worth Zoo is among the most highly regarded in the country.

Texas Motor Speedway. North of the airport, hosting major race weekends. If you are here for a race, book early: the whole northern Metroplex fills up.

Because we sit in the middle of the Metroplex rather than in either downtown, most of the above is a drive rather than a walk. Journey times swing widely with rush hour on SR-114, I-635 and the airport approaches, so allow more time than a map suggests on a weekday morning or late afternoon. The front desk can tell you what traffic normally does on the day you are going.
